A country of trends, Japan is one of the world’s top markets when it comes to lifestyle and luxury goods. In our special edition of Focus on Japan, we look at the plentiful opportunities for companies, particularly European ones, to invest in the country. The Ginza bling Tokyo’s Ginza district is home to all things luxury. Swarovski is an Austrian family company which has grown into a big brand name, known worldwide for its crystal products. It has been in Japan since the 1970s and now boasts 115 shops. Vincent Nelias, Managing Director of Swarovski Japan, spoke to us from the latest and largest outlet. “They (Japanese) are, in a sense, more classic in the choice. They enjoy more delicate designs. They love of course fashion and trends, but the share of jewellery we sell in Japan is more in the classic collections.” Tourism boosts takings For Swarovski, as indeed for the entire premium and luxury sector, one of the challenges is dealing with a boom in tourism. Chinese visitors, for example, totalled 2.5 million in 2014. That number doubled last year, forming a big part of the evolving turnover. Nelias explained: “We had to adjust the way to serve. We have Chinese speaking staff. We have specific best-sellers or collections. And we have also a way to attend them in terms of speed of service, in terms of presenting the collections. “But, what we must not forget is the Japanese consumers. They represent 90 percent of our business in Japan. So, we make sure that we attend to them with the highest service quality possible.” Grasping the ‘Omotenashi’ Reporting from Japan, euronews’ Serge Rombi said: “In this sector, perhaps more than others, if you want to succeed, you must grasp an important concept. “It’s the Omotenashi, exceptional Japanese hospitality, probably one of the most advanced in the world.” And then companies also have to understand certain customs. For example, if a European firm wants to succeed in the market, it must ensure that the Japanese want its products. And of course the goods must already have proven their worth in the core market. The general mood has also changed since the 2011 earthquake in Japan. “What has changed? Before 2011, we consumed many, many things. But in 2011, we realised what we could lose,” said Ako Enomoto, a trend specialist. “What is most precious to us? We value time with our family and friends.” Osaka: a business launch-pad Osaka is a bustling city with a unique atmosphere. It was in Osaka that in 2012 a Danish giant – specialising in “Nordic Deco” – opened its first store in Asia. “Tokyo was too important a market. There’s no room for error. And Osaka was the perfect testing ground,” said Hirotake Yamamoto, CEO of Flying Tiger Japan. “Our products are quite fun, and that fun side, people in Osaka complement very well.” And that test was so successful that the company now has 24 stores in four cities, including Tokyo. There is also a plan to double the number of shops in the coming years. The company has had support from JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organisation. Yamamoto explained: “In this market, we learned two things. First the Japanese market is a mature market and therefore the demand for quality is very important. “Then we had to create specific products and adapt to the needs of the Japanese market. “ When it comes to luxury and lifestyle, the Japanese market is seen as a safe bet and a long-term investment. And the European origin of products in these sectors remains a real asset.

Japanese Supermarket Food Haul! Yes, it's time to do a weekly food shop at a Japanese Supermarket, although I hope it'll last more than a week! I set myself a budget of 3,000 Yen (about 26 USD) to buy some food to keep me going at my Workaway in terms of cooking proper meals rather than eating out. How does Supermarket food in Japan compare to Japanese Convenience stores, ie Family Mart, Lawson & 7/11? You can check out my Japanese Conbini Videos in the Playlists below where I challenged myself to survive on 1000 Yen a day at regular Convenience Stores and 1000 Yen a week at Lawson 100 (Japanese 100 Yen store) FOOD HAUL! Japan life - How expensive is Tokyo, Japan? Well living in Japan is as expensive or as cheap as you want. In this video I give you a good glimpse of how much it costs to be in Tokyo, Japan and it's not as expensive as you think but it can be if you want it to be... There is a lot of talk out on the internet on how life in Japan is stupid expensive. This is a common misconception, as following certain Tokyo travel tips can save you mad money. Thinking about traveling to or living in Japan? This video will show you how to live the Japan life without lighting fire to your bank account. TRANSPORT – Use the subway as much as possible. Getting a subway card (about $5 USD) should be your first priority: it will make your life in Japan so much easier! The ½ hour, 6 kilometre journey I took cost me $2 USD. Contrast that with the cost of taxis in Japan. Tokyo cabs charge among the most expensive rates in the world. Rides can start at $6.50 USD, with per kilometre charges going as high as $3.50 USD. Missed the last train? Hang out in a karaoke bar until the subway reopens; any drinks you buy may cost less than a cab, and you'll have more fun. As Tokyo travel tips go, here's a cool one: return your subway card when leaving Tokyo. You'll get your money back – a penny saved is a penny earned, yes? INTERNETNeed to stay connected on the cheap? There are two options: (1) you can either get a SIM card for $10 USD at airport, which gives you 2 GB of data, or (2) you can take advantage of the free wi-fi available at convenience stores like Lawson's and 7/11. Personally, I prefer SIM cards – for only $10 USD, you can connect to the internet wherever you go during your Japan trip. FOODDelicious Japanese food can be found cheaply throughout Tokyo. Vending machine restaurants serve up dishes like pork katsu with eggs, greens, and soup for no more than $4 USD all-in. Convenience stores like 7/11 and Lawson's sell an endless array of microwaveable meals for no more than $5 USD, making living in Japan easy for busy residents. Don't be shy, as pre-made Japanese food is healthier for you than the takeout you probably eat at home. Want to try Japanese cuisine like an authentic bowl of ramen? Harajuku is a great place to do that without spending too much money. The bowl of noodles I ate in this video cost me 850 yen, or $7.50 USD), a price which makes these restaurants a central part of Japan life. Eating Japanese street food is also a rad experience – the yakitori place that me and my friend Lester visited cost us 3470 yen, or less than $31 USD. This purchased multiple meat skewers, a pile of grilled Japanese mushrooms, and drinks between two hungry friends – not a bad deal at all. Don't want to limit yourself? There is more to Japanese cuisine than noodles, chicken skewers, and vending machine restaurants. Japanese food is one of the world's top cuisines - as such, there are many establishments in Tokyo where you can drop a couple hundred dollars on a fabulous, multi-course dinner prepared by a Michelin star chef. In short, life in Japan is a grand affair for foodies, as there is plenty of amazing Japanese food for all budgets. THINGS TO DO – There are many ways to fill your Tokyo trip with things to do without having your spending spiral out of control. Want an iconic view of the Tokyo skyline? The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building has an observation deck that doesn't charge an admission fee. If you can afford to spend a bit of money, visit the Bella Visto rooftop bar in Shibuya. You may have to pay $15 for a glass of wine, but enduring these prices is part of living in Japan. With the best night time view in Tokyo, it is worth the expense. The Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Roponggi Hills all cost more, but each offer fantastic vantage points over one of the most awe-inspiring cityscapes in the world. Want to enjoy one of Tokyo's best green spaces? Yoyogi Park may charge 500 yen admission ($4.50 USD) for entry, but it goes toward keeping its trees lush and the grounds clean, making it a relaxing place to observe Japan life as it happens. NIGHTLIFE – The price of drinks varies widely in Tokyo. For example, draft beer can cost as little as $1.70 USD, or you could pay as much as $8 USD. If price is a factor, be conscious of where you drink. Start your night by hitting up a convenience store – at 7/11, Lester and I found 500 ml cans of beer for about $1.70 USD. If you plan on hitting the bars in Shibuya, pre-gaming is the way to go – it's part of life in Japan. Looking for a cosy place to drink? Gurengai is the place to go, as it is home to around 400 bars, each of which only seat 10 people. Look for places that don't charge cover (some charge 1000 yen just to sit down!) to save money here. In the video, my friend and I spent about $2 USD for fried octopus balls, and Lester's whiskey drink cost about $5 USD – not bad at all. Did these Tokyo travel tips work out well for you?
